Make This Happen Metal Powers-That-Be!

One uneventful Summer evening I decided to put together my ultimate dream festival. I will pull some strings to get this deal put together by next summer...

Ah, if only...

*Note, this obviously wouldn't be Reading Festival (that has much more diverse and popular music), but it was the only template I could find. Plus, I like the look of it.

Oregon State vs. Boise State: Notes and Thoughts

Everything went as expected in Boise Saturday night, as the Broncos of Boise State defeated the Oregon State Beavers 37-24. The Beavers (1-2) begin Pac-10 play next weekend at home against Arizona State.

- The Beavers defense made strides as far as getting to the ball quicker and running down hill, rather than playing on their heels. This will be crucial to maintain throughout conference play, where nearly every team has an explosive running back.

- Tackling is still suspect to say the least. Not a lot of squaring up and wrapping up, mainly with the defensive backs. Too much diving and leading with the shoulder. This won't cut it as the season progresses.

- Offensive line having some trouble creating holes in the middle for Jacquizz to squeeze through. He's a nimble man, he doesn't need much room. But he needs more than he's been getting. (Also, only 18 carries in the game. Not enough touches, and not enough touches in space. Those draw plays up the middle were not there all night, yet the Beavers continued to run it. Puzzling.)

- Katz is a gamer, and is probably ahead of where he should be in his progression, considering he's faced 2 of the top 5 teams in the country in his first three starts. Accuracy is still an issue, as well as the tendency to hold on to the ball too long to try and make a play. However, Katz has yet to throw an interception and his mobility will continue to benefit him as the offensive line continues to gel.

- James Rodgers may be the most valuable player for the Beavers. His absence was terribly missed in the second half. Besides his running and catching ability, his knack to get other players involved and vocal leadership most certainly could have been used.

Looking ahead briefly to the Sun Devils, ASU pushed Oregon to the limit Saturday night, but costly turnovers kept them from producing an upset. Based on the Sun Devils' play the last two weeks, expect them to give plenty of teams fits this season in the Pac-10. The Beavers have lost their last six Pac-10 openers.

Noteworthy Tours (Pacific Northwest) October

Fall is here, and so are a few prime tours coming to the Portland area. Here are some events to check out:

As I Lay Dying
All That Remains
Unearth
Carnifex

Sunday October 10 @ Roseland Theater, Portland

Solid group of metalcore mainstays, should be a sweaty good time. Check out As I Lay Dying's new album, "The Powerless Rise" if you haven't already, it's a nice display of AILD's guitar work/capabilities.

Envy
La Dispute
Touche Amore
And So I Watched You From Afar

Saturday October 16 @ Hawthorne Theater, Portland

Japan can get a little crazy, and Envy can attest to that. Pretty sweet hardcore band. Good show if you like the old-school hardcore.

Atreyu
blessthefall
Chiodos
Architects
Endless Hallway

Friday October 22 @ Roseland Theater, Portland

More exciting support bands than the headliner. Architects doesn't make it out to Oregon very often, seeing them alone will be worth the price of admission.

August Burns Red
Bring Me The Horizon
Emarosa
Polar Bear Club
This Is Hell

Monday October 25 @ Wonder Ballroom, Portland

ABR always puts on a good show, and the kiddies sure love Bring Me The Horizon. Should be a fun show and a big crowd from start to finish.

Enter Shikari
Haste The Day
Sleeping With Sirens
Ms. White
Lights Go Blue

Another UK band making a rare trip to the area, Enter Shikari has excellent live shows and brings a creative mixture of trance and hardcore that no one can match.

Beavers & Broncos: What's There To Lose?

With Oregon State's impending trip to Boise this Saturday, most of the talk is centered around the Broncos making a run for their third straight undefeated regular season... if they can knock off the Beavers. Do it in style, and maybe a win can propel them to the National Championship game. Talk about pressure.

Over in Corvallis, the only national publicity has been towards the painting of the practice field in "preparation" for the blue turf in Bronco Stadium. Contrary to what Boise State coach Chris Peterson said, it looks like the Beavers have them right where they want them.

By clearing the hurdle against Virginia Tech, Boise knew in the back of their minds that their last real test would be at home against the Beavers. Now the pressure is on to come through, not only with a win, but a big win. A touchdown win won't cut it. Hell, not even a three touchdown win would satisfy the voters. An absolute blowout is the only way the Broncos could even fathom making a case for a finish in the top two in the polls if they were to end the season unbeaten. As well as pasting everyone in their path as well.

Oregon State, on the other hand, has everything to gain and nothing to lose. Sure, the program has suffered some devastating and humiliating losses away from home on national television in the last five years or so. But a loss in Boise doesn't knock the Beavers out of the Rose Bowl hunt. It doesn't crush their National Title dreams (which were never there in the first place). A loss only manufactures another "slow" start to a Mike Riley coached Beaver squad, and being overlooked when Pac-10 play gets fully under way. Of course there will be slightly higher concerns if the Beavs are indeed blown out, but all in all the consequences are not nearly as dire as they would be in Boise.

While most college football fans around the nation outside of Boise (and potentially Eugene) will be pulling for the Beavers to end the talks of a WAC team going to Glendale for the whole ball of wax, only one team's season can truly be ruined with a loss. And it isn't the team that painted their practice field blue.

Hello There

There are two facets in life that can carry me through the day: a little metal and a little football. I would like to share my thoughts on both topics in written form and hopefully enlighten/entertain/inform those who choose to read beyond this post. Feel free to comment/question/poke fun at anything, just keep it reasonable and relatively clean. Thanks and happy Fall Equinox,

-Nat
